Job Description:
Position Summary
The Custodian /Facilities Support Technician is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, secure, and functional learning environment for students, staff, and community members. This position supports daily operations of school facilities and grounds, assists with events and activities, and responds to maintenance and safety needs as they arise. All duties are performed in accordance with district policies, safety regulations, and facility security procedures. Responsibilities may change to meet operational needs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1. Facility Cleaning and Sanitation:
• Clean assigned areas including classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, cafeterias, locker rooms, weightroom and common areas
• Perform routine and deep cleaning tasks to maintain sanitary conditions
• Respond to emergency cleaning situations (e.g., spills, bodily fluids, water leaks)
• Assist with general campus-wide cleaning as needed
• Maintain cleanliness of cafeteria areas and assist with waste disposal and spill response
2. Grounds and Exterior Maintenance
• Maintain school grounds including removal of litter and debris
• Assist with snow and ice removal and other weather-related facility needs
• Support grounds upkeep using appropriate equipment and safety procedures
3. Event and Activity Support
• Set up and take down furniture and equipment for school and community events
• Assist with athletic and activity setups including bleachers, baskets, equipment, and floor protection
• Support community events held in district facilities including setup, assistance, and cleanup
4. Facility Equipment and Furniture Support
• Maintain custodial equipment and perform minor repairs when appropriate
• Assist with assembly and repair of furniture and fixtures
• Prepare, maintain, and assist in refinishing gym floors
• Install and maintain athletic equipment as directed
5. Building Operations and Security Support
• Assist in securing buildings including locking/unlocking facilities and conducting safety checks
• Respond to facility access needs for substitutes, community programs, and approved activities
• Monitor and report safety concerns, facility issues, or security concerns
• Assist in maintaining fire and security equipment checks (e.g., emergency lights, extinguishers)
• Be available for emergency call-ins or building access needs when scheduled
6. Logistics, Supplies, and Support Services
• Receive and verify deliveries and distribute supplies throughout the facility
• Maintain custodial and supply storage areas
• Assist staff with approved work requests and facility support needs
• Support inventory tracking and supply organization as assigned
7. Collaboration and Support Functions
• Assist maintenance personnel as requested
• Support cafeteria staff with heavy lifting or facility needs when required
• Help maintain orderly facility operations during school and community use
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Ability to read instructions and perform basic calculations
• Knowledge of cleaning methods, sanitation procedures, and safe chemical use
• Understanding of emergency and safety procedures
• Familiarity with Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and safe material handling
• Ability to operate custodial and maintenance equipment safely
• Basic computer and communication skills
• Ability to maintain inventory and supplies
• Ability to work independently and respond effectively to changing needs
Physical Demands
This position requires heavy physical work, including:
• Lifting up to 100 pounds occasionally
• Frequent lifting up to 50 pounds
• Continuous lifting up to 20 pounds
• Standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, pushing, pulling, and repetitive motion
• Ability to operate equipment and tools safely
Work Environment
Work occurs both indoors and outdoors and may include exposure to:
• Extreme temperatures
• Dust, dirt, fumes, or odors
• Loud environments
• Wet or slippery conditions
