JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Special Education Teacher
Reports To: Building Principal
Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree required.
• Valid and current New Mexico teaching license with appropriate endorsements.
• Other qualifications as deemed appropriate and acceptable by the Superintendent.

Position Objective:
To support and meet the educational, behavioral, and developmental needs of exceptional students by providing services that are supplemental to, or distinct from, the regular school program.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Professional Conduct & Attendance

• Follow district policies regarding leave and attendance.
• Arrive on time for all job responsibilities and meetings.
• Maintain the physical and mental stamina necessary for job performance.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Principal.

Instructional Planning

• Develop and maintain clear, up-to-date lesson plans aligned with curriculum standards and the Common Core.
• Set defined learning objectives that reflect student needs and program goals.
• Use planning time effectively and productively.
• Analyze assessment results to inform instruction and improve student outcomes.
• Maintain accurate records for grades, attendance, and student data systems.
• Communicate effectively with families and support home-school collaboration.
• Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities.
• Collaborate with general education staff, ancillary service providers, and support teams.
• Plan and conduct effective and compliant Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings.

Instructional Delivery & Classroom Management

• Deliver instruction using a clear, multi-sensory approach appropriate to each student's learning level.
• Adapt teaching methods, materials, and equipment to meet individual student needs in academic, social, behavioral, and physical domains.
• Maintain high student engagement and time on task.
• Foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment conducive to learning.
• Promote students’ self-confidence and self-advocacy.
• Implement fair, consistent behavior management strategies.
• Utilize technology effectively to enhance learning.
• Collaborate with transdisciplinary teams to develop and implement Individualized Behavior Plans (IBPs).
• Provide opportunities for inclusion and interaction with peers in the general education setting.

Physical Demands:

• Must be able to stand, walk, and use hands and arms effectively.
• Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Evaluation:

• Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Board of Education policies.

• Salary and benefits as determined by the district’s salary schedule and contract terms.
