SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETER

Supervisor: Coordinator of Special Education FLSA Status: Exempt
Department:  Special Education Terms of Employment: 168 Days; 7.75 hours/day
Supervises: none
Position Type: Full-Time

Nature of Work
Facilitates communication among Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing students and their hearing peers, the classroom teacher, and other personnel in the school system by providing interpreting/transliterating and other support services as necessary.
 
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Abide by Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Code of Ethics or the National Association of the Deaf Code of Ethics.
  • Provide voice-to-sign and sign-to-voice interpreting/transliterating for Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing students in main stream classes.
  • Work as part of a team, and accept mentoring and guidance from peers.
  • Provide tutoring and/or note taking services for Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing students when interpreting/transliterating services are not needed.
  • Participate in educational team meetings, including the development and review of progress on the Individualized Education Plan, providing insight on the success of communication strategies.
  • Provide orientations on deafness to hearing students and staff as needed.
  • Provide information and support to parents and families of Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing students, when appropriate.
  • Provide in-service education and serve as consultant to teachers, school staff members and administrators on topics concerning sign language interpreting/transliterating in the educational setting.
  • Maintain professional growth and certification through participation in in-service and staff development activities.
  • Exhibit professionalism by maintaining good attendance and adhering to established work schedule.
  • Comply with the Code of Ethics, administrative directives, board policies, state and federal statues and rules and regulations.
  • Communicate and display courteous and professional behavior toward students, the public, the Immediate Supervisor, School and District Administrators, staff and peers.
  • Safeguard the confidentiality of information pursuant to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and other applicable state and federal statutes.
  • Evenings and weekend work may be required.
  • Perform such other tasks as may be assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  1. Must possess a current certification by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc., Level III or above by the National Association of the Deaf (NAD), and/or 4.0 on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) OR Eligible to qualify for a 5-year Provisional Licensure through the New Mexico Sign Language Interpreting Practice Board.
  2. Valid New Mexico Public Education Department (PED) License
  3. Provide accurate sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign interpretation/transliteration.
  4. Must pass background check.           
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
Knowledge of: various machines and equipment including but not limited to computer, telephone, instructional technology.
Ability to:  verbal ability required to understand oral and written instructions; motor coordination required to coordinate eyes, hands and fingers when operating machines and equipment essential to the job; manual and finger dexterity required to operate machines and equipment precisely and rapidly.
