General Job Description:
The Bilingual Teacher assists students to communicate and understand their home language. They encourage students to practice vocabularies they’ve learned and assist them in accurately listening, speaking, writing and reading the home language. Teacher provides focused instructional support to students in the areas of Navajo language and culture and other Native American cultures.
 
Teaches a minimal of 45 minutes in the language that is being taught and teaches the core Curriculum Content Standards in the English language, using ESL/ELD standards for students who do not demonstrate proficiency in English. Assists students with learning English and understands the culture of the students/community.
 
Education/Experience: A successful candidate must possess a teaching license and a bilingual endorsement or able to receive a 520 License through the New Mexico Public Education Department.

Qualifications:
  1. Bachelor’s degree or Associates Degree
  2. Valid New Mexico teaching license with endorsements as needed.
  3. Must be literate and fluent in the language being taught.
 
Physical Requirements:
                Sitting, standing, lifting and carrying (up to 50 lbs.), reaching, squatting, kneeling and moving light furniture may be required.
 
Performance Responsibilities:
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  1. Delivers direct instructional support to students and instructional staff in the areas of Native American languages & cultures
  2. Provides demonstration lessons for students from linguistically and /or culturally diverse backgrounds.
  3. Collaborates with site-based language teachers and other Native language teachers.
  4. Collaborates on district professional development team for training Native American instruction methods and strategies.
  5. Analyzes/reviews the academic needs of Native American students within the service area for language and cultural needs.

  • Proficient with word processing, database and spreadsheet software.
  • Knowledge of District policies on immunization, medication, first aid, emergencies and child abuse/neglect.
  • Knowledge of all laws, regulations and guidelines affecting teachers and students.
  • Knowledge of effective classroom management techniques.
  • Ability to maintain positive relationships with students, parents, community members and staff.
  • Certificate in TESOL, ESL or Bilingual Education preferred.
Knowledge of: literacy and bi-literacy, standards based education, Performance Counts, continuous improvement methodology, first and second language acquisition, and multicultural education.
  • Knowledge of ESL, ELD, sheltering and/or home language instruction.
  • Experience in the design and implementation of systemic professional development.
  • Knowledge and experience with immersion methods for teaching Native American languages
 
Work Environment:  Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality. Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignments without direct supervision. After hour work may be required. May make site or home visits when needed and appropriate.
